Centre of Origin: Europe and southeast Asia.
Description: a shrub with several erect trunks. Trunk is brownish grey, branches are forked. Leaves are 5–10 cm long, whole and obovate, apex is acuminate and hairy. Flowers are small, ripe nuts are greyish brown.
Habitat: calciphile, thrives on dryish and moist, fertile deciduous and mixed forests. Tolerates shade.
